Ty Coutelier: a certificate for your knife
We examine your knife and enter it into the A.I.P.C.L., even if you bought it elsewhere
Videos about this forge
We visit the workshops ourselves and show how the work is done. One click opens the video on YouTube.
Ty Coutelier is a workshop that follows its own path. The name comes from Breton: Ty means house. Ty Coutelier is therefore, quite literally, the house of the cutler, and that is exactly how the workshop in the Aveyron is meant to be, a place you enter as you would a home.
The road there ran through Brittany, past a grandfather who treated his knife like a treasure, through a detour into baking and through more than ten years of training within a Laguiole company. The workshop has stood since 2019. Buying a knife there means taking a piece of that story with you.
Every workshop has its signature. At Ty Coutelier it is the care taken over the transitions: the fit of the platines, the cleanness of the mitres, the way the spring runs out. These are pieces from a small workshop, not series production, and it shows.
That is exactly what we look at in your photographs. If in doubt we ask the workshop itself before issuing a certificate.
A portrait of the forge
Some stories begin with a single, simple gesture. For me it all began in Brittany, with a grandfather who looked after his knife as though it were a treasure. The click of the blade at the end of a meal, the care taken in cleaning it, the almost ritual way of putting it away.
Those moments first awoke a fascination, and then a conviction: a knife is not an object. It is a companion for life. A companion that cuts, divides and mends. A companion that shares an impromptu meal, opens a conversation, speaks of origin, of craftsmanship, of a gift chosen with care. A companion that outlasts time.
After a detour into baking and pastry, where the work is likewise about creating, transforming, kneading and shaping, the wish to make objects that carry emotion remained. And then one day came that inner voice: what if I made these knives that fascinate me so much myself?
From Brittany to the Aveyron, the journey became a matter of course. A passionate apprenticeship, more than ten years, learning materials, mechanisms, assembly and finishing techniques within a Laguiole workshop. Then the passing on, essential and entirely natural: training new cutlers, sharing knowledge that had grown patiently.
And in 2019 everything came together. A welcoming region, a workshop opening in exactly the right place, encounters at the right moment. That is how Ty Coutelier came to be.
A name that carries a whole story. In Breton, Ty means "house". A plain, warm word, deeply rooted in the origins of the craft. To choose Ty is to say that every knife is made as it would be at home: with care, with respect for the gestures, with the wish to pass on an emotion. It is also a tribute to Brittany, where it all began, where the first knife rang out on the family table.
Ty Coutelier is therefore, quite literally, the house of the cutler. A workshop and boutique that you enter as you would a home, where every piece tells a story: of a gesture, of a place, of a craftsman who puts his heart into the material.
Welcome to Ty Coutelier. Here a knife is never merely a knife. It is an emotion to be shared.
More about this forge
How it works
You order the examination. In the original-laguiole.de shop, for 10.00 euros, like a product. Then you upload photographs of your knife in your customer account: open and closed, the bee, the spine, the blade with the forge mark, and if available the receipt or packaging.
We examine it. We compare your knife with what we know from 30 years of trading with French forges, and when in doubt we ask the forge itself.
You get the result. If your knife is genuine it receives its own number, its page on aipcl.com and the certificate as a PDF. If it is not, we tell you that too.
What it costs
10.00 eurosExamining and registering one knife costs 10.00 euros.
If the examination shows that your knife does not come from a French forge, we refund the amount, of course. You pay only for a certificate you actually receive.
The examination is ordered in the original-laguiole.de shop. With the purchase you buy the examination, not the certificate; whether we issue it depends on the result of examining your photographs.
