Do you own a Laguiole pocket knife made in France with an A.I.P.C.L. number?

Look up here who owns it and which forge it came from. If you do not have a number, please ask your dealer or the forge.

The Brun workshop stands in the village of Laguiole itself. A married couple, both cutlers, working for themselves since 2014. They forge Laguiole folding knives, very often to order, and frequently from materials one rarely sees: mammoth molar, mammoth tusk, warthog ivory.

The most recent creation is called Piquet d'Aubrac. Its handle comes from old fence posts off the Aubrac plateau, stabilised in resin, with every lichen and patch of moss the wood brought with it.

Every workshop has its signature. At Brun it is the bee forged in one piece with the spring rather than attached afterwards, together with the hand-chased surface, worked with file and chisel. That is visible on a genuine piece and cannot be imitated in passing.

That is exactly what we look at in your photographs. If in doubt we ask the workshop itself before issuing a certificate.

A portrait of the forge

The Brun cutlery lies in the village of Laguiole itself, in the Aveyron. For its maker the path was never in question: knife-making has fascinated him since childhood, and so it became his trade. Almost twenty years as an employee, and since 2014 his own workshop.

His wife is a cutler too and joined him in the venture. Since founding the workshop, what the two of them value above all is one thing: the freedom to make knives exactly as they see fit.

The work centres on forged Laguiole folding knives, and one detail stands out that is not found everywhere: the bee is forged in one piece with the spring, not attached afterwards. The chasing is done by hand, with file and chisel. No two knives are therefore quite alike; each one is a single piece.

Much of the work is made to order, so that what emerges is precisely the knife the customer had in mind. The handle may be wood, horn or bone, or rarer materials such as mammoth molar, mammoth tusk or warthog ivory. Sizes run from ten to fourteen centimetres, as a plain knife or with a corkscrew.

The most recent creation carries the name Piquet d'Aubrac. Its handle comes from old fence posts that stood for decades in the wind and rain on the Aubrac plateau. The wood is stabilised in resin, which makes it stand up well to use while keeping every unevenness, every lichen and every patch of moss the post brought with it. A piece of the Aubrac to hold in your hand.

How it works

1

You order the examination. In the original-laguiole.de shop, for 10.00 euros, like a product. Then you upload photographs of your knife in your customer account: open and closed, the bee, the spine, the blade with the forge mark, and if available the receipt or packaging.

2

We examine it. We compare your knife with what we know from 30 years of trading with French forges, and when in doubt we ask the forge itself.

3

You get the result. If your knife is genuine it receives its own number, its page on aipcl.com and the certificate as a PDF. If it is not, we tell you that too.

What it costs

10.00 euros

Examining and registering one knife costs 10.00 euros.

If the examination shows that your knife does not come from a French forge, we refund the amount, of course. You pay only for a certificate you actually receive.

The examination is ordered in the original-laguiole.de shop. With the purchase you buy the examination, not the certificate; whether we issue it depends on the result of examining your photographs.
