You own a knife by Laguiole Chevalier but did not buy it at original-laguiole.de? You can still have it entered into the A.I.P.C.L. A genuine knife from this forge stays a genuine knife, whichever counter it crossed.
Who is Laguiole Chevalier?
Chevalier is a forge committed to the classic Laguiole: the shape made with respect for its models, the spring work careful, the grind clear and clean. Every piece radiates a modesty that could not be more elegant. Whoever gets hold of a Chevalier knife feels the calm that craft sometimes needs in order to achieve something great.
What we look at on a knife by Laguiole Chevalier
Every forge has its signature. With Laguiole Chevalier it is the loyalty to the classic shape, the careful spring work and the clean, clear grind. That is exactly what allows a knife to be identified, and it is what we examine in your photographs. If a question remains, we go to the forge itself.
A portrait of the forge
Chevalier Laguiole was created in 2004 out of the old legend of the fire knight. The name, French for knight, is a statement of intent: bearing, and the ambition to give one's best. The brand is designed in Wuppertal and forged in France by cutlers who have practised the trade for generations. It is therefore a European story, and both halves of it can be seen in the knives.
No model is off the shelf goods. The bees and the filework were designed specifically for Chevalier Laguiole and are engraved by hand by experienced masters. Only damascus blades or high grade stainless blade steels are offered; handle materials range from horn and wood to stabilised poplar burl and mammoth ivory. Each edition carries its own name and character: Gawain, the original edition engraved with the fire knight; Rouse, with powerful shapes; Cateline and Aveline in finer execution; Perceval with double platines and selected handle materials.
The word Laguiole is not protected, which makes the question of authenticity a fair one with these knives. With Chevalier Laguiole it does not arise, because every knife carries an A.I.P.C.L. certificate of authenticity. It records where the knife was made and passes to the new owner when the knife changes hands.
More about this forge
How it works
You order the examination. In the original-laguiole.de shop, for 10.00 euros, like a product. Then you upload photographs of your knife in your customer account: open and closed, the bee, the spine, the blade with the forge mark, and if available the receipt or packaging.
We examine it. We compare your knife with what we know from 30 years of trading with French forges, and when in doubt we ask the forge itself.
You get the result. If your knife is genuine it receives its own number, its page on aipcl.com and the certificate as a PDF. If it is not, we tell you that too.
What it costs
10.00 eurosExamining and registering one knife costs 10.00 euros.
If the examination shows that your knife does not come from a French forge, we refund the amount, of course. You pay only for a certificate you actually receive.
The examination is ordered in the original-laguiole.de shop. With the purchase you buy the examination, not the certificate; whether we issue it depends on the result of examining your photographs.
