Do you own a Laguiole pocket knife made in France with an A.I.P.C.L. number?

Look up here who owns it and which forge it came from. If you do not have a number, please ask your dealer or the forge.

What you can check yourself, and what we can examine for you

Search Amazon for a Laguiole and you get hundreds of results, many under thirty euros, often labelled "original" or "French Style". Which leads to a question we receive almost weekly: is my knife genuine?

First things first: the name Laguiole is not protected. Anyone may call a knife by that name, wherever it was made. This is not trademark abuse, it is simply the law. The name on its own therefore tells you nothing, and that is exactly why A.I.P.C.L. exists.

Six things you can check yourself

What we can do for you

If those points leave you uncertain, we will look at your knife. You send photographs and your Amazon receipt, we identify the knife and tell you what you have. If it is a genuine French Laguiole we enter it into the A.I.P.C.L. and you receive your certificate. If it is not, we tell you that too, plainly and with reasons.

How it works

1

You order the examination. In the original-laguiole.de shop, for 10.00 euros, like a product. Then you upload photographs of your knife in your customer account: open and closed, the bee, the spine, the blade with the forge mark, and if available the receipt or packaging.

2

We examine it. We compare your knife with what we know from 30 years of trading with French forges, and when in doubt we ask the forge itself.

3

You get the result. If your knife is genuine it receives its own number, its page on aipcl.com and the certificate as a PDF. If it is not, we tell you that too.

What it costs

10.00 euros

Examining and registering one knife costs 10.00 euros.

If the examination shows that your knife does not come from a French forge, we refund the amount, of course. You pay only for a certificate you actually receive.

The examination is ordered in the original-laguiole.de shop. With the purchase you buy the examination, not the certificate; whether we issue it depends on the result of examining your photographs.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a knife made in China allowed to be called a Laguiole?
Because the name is not protected. Laguiole is a village in the Aveyron and at the same time the name of a knife shape, but not a protected designation of origin like Champagne. Anyone making a knife of that shape may call it that, wherever they are. The name therefore tells you nothing about origin, and that is why the A.I.P.C.L. certificate exists.
Is a cheap Laguiole from Amazon automatically a fake?
It is not a fake, because only a protected trademark can be faked. It is a knife in the Laguiole shape, industrially made, usually in the Far East. As a working knife it may do its job. It simply is not a handmade French Laguiole, and anyone who paid the price of one has been misled.
Can I have a knife bought on Amazon registered?
Yes, if it really does come from a French forge. Send us photographs and your receipt. Genuine French knives are regularly sold on Amazon too, by specialist dealers among others.
How do I recognise a welded on bee?
Look at the joint between the bee and the spring from the side. On a forged bee the metal flows together with no edge and no seam. A welded one sits on top, looks flat and shows a visible line at its base. It is usually far less finely worked as well.
