Laguiole bought on Amazon: is it genuine?
What you can check yourself, and what we can examine for you
Search Amazon for a Laguiole and you get hundreds of results, many under thirty euros, often labelled "original" or "French Style". Which leads to a question we receive almost weekly: is my knife genuine?
First things first: the name Laguiole is not protected. Anyone may call a knife by that name, wherever it was made. This is not trademark abuse, it is simply the law. The name on its own therefore tells you nothing, and that is exactly why A.I.P.C.L. exists.
Six things you can check yourself
- The price. A Laguiole made by hand in France rarely costs less than a hundred euros. The working hours for guillochage and assembly alone exceed that. A knife at 25 euros can be many things, but not that.
- The statement of origin. Does it really say "made in France" and name the forge, or only "French design", "French Style", "in the French tradition"? Those phrasings are chosen precisely because they claim nothing.
- The seller. Is it the forge itself, a known specialist dealer, or a name with no legal notice and no address in Europe?
- The bee. On a handmade knife it is forged out of the spring and merges into it seamlessly. Welded on bees are flat, angular at the joint and short on detail.
- The guillochage. Lines cut by file are never mathematically even. If the pattern looks stamped, it was stamped.
- What comes with it. Since September 2025 every knife sold through us carries a numbered A.I.P.C.L. card. The complete absence of any proof of origin also tells you something.
What we can do for you
If those points leave you uncertain, we will look at your knife. You send photographs and your Amazon receipt, we identify the knife and tell you what you have. If it is a genuine French Laguiole we enter it into the A.I.P.C.L. and you receive your certificate. If it is not, we tell you that too, plainly and with reasons.
How it works
You order the examination. In the original-laguiole.de shop, for 10.00 euros, like a product. Then you upload photographs of your knife in your customer account: open and closed, the bee, the spine, the blade with the forge mark, and if available the receipt or packaging.
We examine it. We compare your knife with what we know from 30 years of trading with French forges, and when in doubt we ask the forge itself.
You get the result. If your knife is genuine it receives its own number, its page on aipcl.com and the certificate as a PDF. If it is not, we tell you that too.
What it costs
10.00 eurosExamining and registering one knife costs 10.00 euros.
If the examination shows that your knife does not come from a French forge, we refund the amount, of course. You pay only for a certificate you actually receive.
The examination is ordered in the original-laguiole.de shop. With the purchase you buy the examination, not the certificate; whether we issue it depends on the result of examining your photographs.
